More positive economic news for Shropshire and UK

Philip Dunne at his Bridgnorth Jobs Fair

This week's figures from the Office for National Statistics show the number of Jobseekers in the Ludlow Constituency has more than halved since the last General Election. There are now 519 claiming out of work benefits, down 50.76% from 1054 in May 2010.

These figures form part of a strong overall picture for the UK economy as the number of unemployed people has fallen below 2 million for the first time since 2008. There are now 30.76 million people in work, the highest level on record, while youth unemployment has seen the largest annual fall since records began.

Mr Dunne said "I am delighted to see the Government's long term economic plan is working so well for Shropshire. This was evident from my jobs fair in Bridgnorth last week, where many more local jobs were on offer.

To reduce by more than half the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance is a truly remarkable achievement. Government measures to boost business are clearly helping local people find jobs, moving off benefits and into work. This gives them peace of mind and security that comes with a job and a regular pay packet.

I am particularly pleased youth unemployment has fallen so significantly under this Government. At the last General Election, the number of 18-24 year olds in the Ludlow Constituency claiming Jobseekers Allowance was 280. It has now fallen to 120.

The last recession hit local people hard, but this Government was prepared to take the tough decisions and now we are starting to see the benefits. To turn away from our long term economic plan now would risk losing all we have worked so hard to gain."
